Bed Bug Prevention Tips

Check bed sheets for fecal stains, these are blackish gray in color and are absorbed by the sheet or mattress and tend to spread out. Bed bugs may also leave a small black spot of excrement in areas where many bugs are huddled together.

Be very careful bringing second hand bedding or box springs into your home or anything that is second hand. Thoroughly examine everything for signs of a bed bug infestation.

Look at and under mattress edges (the cord) for live, dead, and skins of bed bugs. Their eggs are white, shaped like a miniature test tube and often are found in groups. Eggs are difficult to see. Do the same with the box springs.

On couches look at all and under the folds of material especially any flaps in the front. All head rest areas should be examined closely and then areas where your arms rest while sitting on the couch.

Bed bugs are normally found within 7ft. of their food source (that’s us). The favorite hang out of this blood sucking pest are beds (the mattress, box springs, and bed frame), couches and recliners or overstuffed chairs. The heavier the infestation the more diverse are the locations that they may be found in.

Bed bugs do not fly or jump. They can crawl really fast and climb very well. They normally feed in the wee hours of a new day (3 a.m. - 6:30 a.m.).  It takes between seven and eleven minutes for the bug to get it’s fill and then it will slink back to its resting place. It is reported by several universities that bed bugs can go up to eight months without eating!

There are several things that can be purchased to help protect your home from a bed bug infestation. Various monitors work to alert you that bed bugs are in your residence. Box spring and mattress encasements are excellent tools to keep bed bugs out of those furnishings. A good flashlight for inspecting is a necessity. Be sure and conduct inspections of your furniture at least every other week.

Bed bugs are hitch hikers. It makes no difference how clean your home is. They are deposited in your house by other people or they arrive on items that you bring into your home. They also may attach themselves to your clothing and come right in your door when you do. Creepy isn’t it? If you get them, contact a professional exterminator to help you rid your home of this ancient pest.
